Beijing, June 12 (reporter Yue Chuan) Basketball legend Jerry West has died at the age of 86, according to an obituary issued by the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) on Wednesday evening. His wife Karen was by his side as he died.

Both as a player and as a team manager after his retirement, West has created brilliant achievements. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame three times in various capacities.

Born in 1938 in West Virginia, West is one of the greatest players in NBA history.

In 1960, West was selected second overall by the Minneapolis Lakers, thus entering the league as the No. 2 overall pick. In his 14 years with the Lakers, he reached the Finals nine times and is the only player in league history to win the Finals Most Valuable Player (FMVP) as a losing team.

Throughout his career, West has averaged 27 points and 6.7 assists per game, shooting 47.4% from the field, and is the rare player in league history to average 40 points per game in a single playoff season.

West honors, he was elected to the All-Star 14 times, 12 times selected to the All-season team, five times selected to the All-defensive team, and the championship, scoring, assist king and other honors in his arms, but also before entering the NBA as a captain led the United States to win the Olympic gold medal. After a brilliant career, West was inducted into the NBA 50th Anniversary Team, the NBA 75th Anniversary Team (Big 50 and Big 75), and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (1979, 2010).

After retiring, West did not leave basketball, and he opened a new world in his new identity as a team manager.

As general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, West helped create the great "Showtime" era, and then brought Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O 'Neal and coach Phil Jackson to the team from 1996 to 2000, creating another period of the Purple and Gold dynasty.

As an executive, West contributed five championships to the Lakers and was named "General Manager of the Year" in 1995.
